Chiropractic Medicine: Aligning Your Body for Wellness

Chiropractic medicine is based on the premise that the body is self-sustaining and self-healing. The human spine and the vast networks of nerves that connect it to the rest of your body are vital for optimal performance. If this system is compromised, the rest of your physical health will suffer. Many people understand health from a physical standpoint but do not realize that wellness encompasses more than just exercising regularly and eating well. The goal of emergency chiropractor Melbourne is to help your body achieve wellness from both a physical and an emotional standpoint.

Many clients come to see chiropractors because of pain or a specific condition but when they begin care they discover that their overall quality of life improves greatly. This is because the body communicates so much through its nervous system and if there are miscommunications within the spinal column or central nervous system, the whole body can experience symptoms. Chiropractors do not treat pain or specific conditions, they find the cause of the communication breakdown and address it, thus allowing the whole body to heal.

The primary method of treatment by a chiropractor is a manual adjustment, or manipulation, to the vertebrae in the spine. When a vertebrae is out of place, chiropractors refer to it as a subluxation. Subluxations can be caused by car accidents, falls, sports injuries, bad posture, poor sleeping habits, stress and the general wear and tear on your body. They can also be present from birth, as infants are adjusting to their new world by using their arms and legs for support.

When a chiropractor adjusts the spine, they are looking for any areas that have become restricted or not moving properly, which can lead to irritations in other parts of the body and may result in pain, discomfort, or disease. To determine if you have subluxations, your chiropractor will perform examinations and may order imaging or lab tests to confirm the diagnosis.

During the manipulation, your chiropractor will position you so they can apply force to the joint and move it to its normal range of motion. You may feel a slight pop or movement of the bone, but in most cases you will not experience any sensation of pain. The chiropractor can use a number of methods to accomplish this, including soft tissue manipulation such as massage or trigger point therapy, high velocity thrusts, joint mobilization with passive movements of the joint and low amplitude thrusts. The chiropractic profession has a very good safety record and in rare occasions (less than one per two million spinal manipulations) there has been a serious adverse event, such as cervical arterial stroke from neck manipulation. This can be prevented by screening for medical problems before a manipulation, such as stenosis of the spinal canal, vascular issues, and numbness or weakness in certain areas of the body.
